I've tried to keep mine fairly simple, with an introduction, and then information on this website, and a little more.
And now, with any luck you are making your decision.
Let's Make this better.
Nice feel good saying Bourke. What does it mean? Good question. George Bush Political strategist Lee Atwater has been credited with the saying "Perception is reality" although I first heard it more than 20 years ago when I was interviewing former Liberal party kingpin Keith Davey.
That's where it begins. The perception all politicians are corrupt and in it for themselves, nothing ever changes, and no one listens.
(most of the people I've known in municipal politics have been in it for the right reasons. Some are more interested in a higher office, and that's okay, again, for the right reasons. And like any other group, some are, indeed in it for themselves. And honestly, we all want to win. There is some ego involved for all of us. That's just life)
I'm not naive enough to think that can be changed overnight. Too many people before me, at all levels have done a pretty good job of tarnishing the political business.
I guess I hope to start changing that, just a little bit. If you have been a listener for the past 32 years, or a reader of my column, you kind of know me. I used to tell new broadcasters, it's a whole lot easier to remember how to react each day, if you are being yourself, not just playing a part.
Over the years, I've been straightforward on a lot of issues. Sometimes I didn't have the answers. Most of us don't. That's why it's necessary to ask questions. A lot of times, I would try to cut through the "black and white" just to see how grey the issue really was.
In a way, I've done my part on the first step towards "making this better" My opinions, thoughts and ideas are clearly laid out on this website, specifically on this blog, and in the My Commitments page. It's easy to contact me if you have questions.
The next step, is up to you. It's not the responsibility of any group or agency in the area, elected or otherwise.
By carefully considering your vote, and reflecting on the issues of importance to you, and then actually getting out and marking the ballot, you are taking the step. By refusing to take any interest you are achieving nothing.
And after all the votes are counted, we can work on getting that other foot to move.
