Maybe this is a little bit of "City finances for dummies" And I am not calling you a dummy. But the way our system works, is honestly a mess.
The division of power...who is responsible for what et cetera, makes the vast majority of voters everywhere give up even trying to figure out.
I spent years sorting through (insert bad word here)... in an effort to make some issues easier to understand.
It's a plan I intend to follow if I am elected, Communication is key. and we need to understand very few people are versed in either political or bureaucratic bafflegab. I'll be telling you straight out what things mean. To begin with, lets figure out what we are talking about.
What does the city pay for: Someone has to clear the roads, maintain the parks, and even fight the fires, Those are all items Waterloo covers. And here is how that breaks down
28 per cent of your Waterloo tax dollar goes to fire services (paying firefighters, maintaining or purchasing equipment, fire safety programs)
17 per cent is operations,...keeping the city going,,..for instance keeping the 800 KM of road in the city clear.
14 per cent goes to government administration, in other words, the people overseeing the ones carrying out the operations....in the very simplest if terms.
About half of all the money the city spends goes to salaries and benefits, everyone from concession workers....to firefighters to the chief administrative officer...and councillors too.
Over the years,I've heard a lot of people complain there's nothing but waste and inefficiency at the government level. Every government level. Here's the city's simplified financial report....I'd like you to look at it,,,
Once you have done that, then get back to me with your thoughts. Do we spend too much on some things...too little on others... It's not enough to just generally decry waste and inefficiency. If you have some thoughts on what you might be prepared to give up as a taxpayer to keep your costs down, I would be happy to hear about it. I might not agree with anything you say, or I might like it all. Either way we both gain something..... and the dialogue stays open.
